Despite being a genuinely talented artist, middle schooler Moritaka Mashiro has pretty much resigned himself to a normal, unremarkable life. That changes when Akito Takagi, an aspiring writer, sees one of Mashiro's drawings and pushes him to collaborate on a manga. Mashiro's initial hesitation makes sense—his uncle was a mangaka who literally worked himself to death just years before. But then Mashiro finds out his crush, Miho Azuki, wants to be a voice actress, and suddenly he's got real motivation: create a manga good enough to get adapted into an anime where she can be the lead. Miho's into it too, and they make a deal—they'll get married once they've both made their dreams happen. Bakuman. follows Mashiro and Takagi as they chase serialization in Weekly Shounen Jump and try to actually become successful manga artists. It's basically a high-stakes gamble against impossible odds—do they make it, or do they become just another cautionary tale?
