A young woman tracks down the elderly Nagakura Shinpachi in 1912, hoping to learn the real story behind Hijikata Toshizou, the notorious Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi known as the Demon. The narrative flashes back to 1859, when Hijikata was still just a violent, ambitious kid working on his swordsmanship while helping sell his family's medicine. Looking for tougher opponents to test himself against, he gradually crosses paths with people who'll later become his brothers-in-arms in the Shinsengumi. The first person to really catch his attention is Kondo Isami—a fighter who turns out to be better with a blade than Hijikata himself.
