Beyond this world exists the Twelve Kingdoms, a realm governed by the Way—a moral code tied to the Mandate of Heaven. When a ruler proves unworthy, their kingdom suffers through war and famine. It's a strange land where babies grow on trees and mythical beasts walk freely. A temporary rift between worlds tears high school student Youko Nakajima out of her ordinary life and dumps her in a nightmare version of a fantasy world. She was always the model student, someone who played by the rules and did what was expected. Now she's lost, hunted by both men and creatures in a lawless wilderness where kindness is scarce and nothing makes sense. Youko has to figure out this bizarre new world and its brutal inhabitants while learning to trust her own judgment—assuming she survives long enough to develop any.
