During the Civil War, the North turned to forbidden magic to give their soldiers superhuman power, transforming them into creatures called Incarnates. It worked—they won the war. But afterward, people grew afraid of them. Some shunned them. Some killed them. Years pass. Nancy Schaal Bancroft tracks down the man she believes murdered her Incarnate father and shoots him with an elephant gun. He doesn't even flinch. Before she can try again, he's distracted by another Incarnate killing spree. During the fight, Nancy discovers something shocking: her father's killer is an Incarnate too. And he's hunting the others on purpose—he made a vow to put down any Incarnate who's lost their humanity. After the rogue Incarnate falls, the killer—a man named Hank—offers Nancy a deal. Travel with him, and he'll explain what really happened to her father. He'll show her why these monsters are better off dead.
