The story opens at A Baoa Qu during the One Year War's final days, where Federation and Zeon forces collide in a desperate last stand. Two soldiers find themselves struggling to survive the chaos: Eric Blanke, a Zeon pilot who can only watch as his friends die one by one, and Courand Hughes, a Federation squad captain equally powerless to save his own men. Both are left deeply traumatized by the experience. Two years pass. By Universal Century 0081, Eric has become a lone wolf, continuing to fight the Federation out of a desire for revenge against what he sees as their countless crimes. But standing in his way is Courand, now commanding a special-operations unit specifically formed to hunt down remaining Zeon forces like Eric. The difference is that Courand no longer fights to win—he fights hoping for death, wanting nothing more than to reunite with the comrades he lost at A Baoa Qu.
