A portal to another world suddenly opens in Tokyo's Ginza district in August. Monsters and soldiers pour through, turning the shopping area into a war zone before the JSDF manages to push them back and seal the gate. To prepare for future encounters and establish diplomatic contact, the military sends the Third Reconnaissance Team through to explore the other side. Leading the group is Youji Itami, a 33-year-old JSDF officer who also happens to be a total otaku. As the team travels through the Special Region, they face hostile forces but gradually learn about the local culture and landscape. Their humanitarian work slowly wins over the locals, and they make some interesting allies—an elf, a sorceress, and even a demigoddess join their group. Meanwhile, the major world powers like the US, China, and Russia are watching closely. They see the Special Region's resources as a way to shift the balance of global power, and they start pressuring Japan diplomatically to gain access. But while the superpowers view the gate as just another tool for political leverage, Itami and his team see something different: a chance to build genuine connections, expand their knowledge, and fundamentally change how they see the world.
