Hakone Ekiden is Japan's most competitive marathon relay race, and only the best university runners make the cut. Senior Haiji Kiyose is running out of time to achieve his dream of competing in it. His plan? Recruit nine other guys from his shabby dorm, Chikusei-sou, and form a relay team. Enter Kakeru Kurahara, a first-year student trying to keep a low profile—until he screws up his rent money and ends up stealing food from a convenience store to survive. When Haiji spots him running away, he recognizes Kakeru immediately: the guy's a former runner with a pretty rough reputation. After their brief chase, Haiji offers him a place at Chikusei-sou. Kakeru's not thrilled about it, but he moves in anyway. The dorm is full of guys with completely different backgrounds and personalities. With Kakeru finally in the picture, Haiji can actually start putting his plan into motion. The problem? Only Kakeru knows what Haiji's actually up to. When Haiji finally drops the truth on everyone else, will they actually get on board with his crazy goal?
