Journal with Witch
Ikoku Nikki
Thirty-five-year-old novelist Makio Koudai never had much of a relationship with her older sister Minori, who constantly criticized her for being different. So when Minori and her husband die in a car accident, Makio doesn't fall apart—until she has to identify their bodies and comes face-to-face with her fifteen-year-old niece Asa, whom she hasn't seen in years. Asa's reeling from losing her parents, and Makio does her best to validate the messy emotions the teenager's going through. She suggests keeping a diary to process the grief. When it becomes clear that no one else in the family's willing to step up, Makio decides to take Asa in as her guardian—despite having zero experience with anything like this. What follows is a story about two people learning to live together and figure themselves out in a world that doesn't make much sense right now.
