Their lives both shift when Arata Wataya transfers into their class. Arata's passion for competitive karuta, a traditional card game based on classical Japanese poetry, completely captivates Chihaya. She throws herself into the sport with genuine enthusiasm. Taichi, refusing to be outdone by Arata's natural skill, joins in as well—driven by competitive pride and a desire to eventually beat his rival. The three become inseparable, practicing karuta constantly until circumstances tear them apart. Years later in high school, they unexpectedly reunite through the competitive karuta circuit.
