Synopsis

Yukito Urabe is the son of a cult leader devoted to an all-powerful god called Mitama. When he undergoes an initiation ritual to become the next guru, something goes wrong—he dies. His last wish is to be reborn somewhere without gods or religion. He gets exactly what he asked for. Yukito wakes up in a peaceful village in a world that has no gods at all. He settles in, makes friends, and starts to feel at home. Then he learns the dark truth about this place: when people in the empire reach a certain age, they're required by law to kill themselves. The villagers, who fear death like normal people do, are considered defective by the government. When Yukito and his friends face execution for refusing to comply, Mitama suddenly appears and saves them. Seeing his old god with his own eyes completely changes how Yukito thinks. He realizes that the religion he used to hate might actually be what saves this world. So he takes what he learned as a cult leader and founds his own Mitama-based religion, using it to rally the people against the empire's brutal system.
