Sasaki's job is draining, but there's one thing that makes it bearable: Yamada's smile at the 24-hour supermarket he visits every day. After getting chewed out by his boss, he stops by just to see her and get his spirits lifted. One night, Yamada's already left by the time he arrives. Disappointed, he's looking for a place to smoke when Tayama—a coworker of Yamada's—calls him over from behind the store. She's bold and a little reckless, and doesn't waste time pointing out that he basically comes in just to see Yamada. She even tells Yamada about it.
