Patalliro!
Somewhere in the South Seas lies an island called Malynera, blessed with eternal spring. It's covered in green forests, dotted with lakes, and dominated by tall mountains—mountains that hide something valuable: diamonds. Lots of them. The island's king is Patalliro the 8th, and he's only ten years old. From birth, everyone could tell he was different. Patalliro's a hyperactive kid with bursts of genuine brilliance mixed with moments of thoughtless meanness and an unfortunate talent for terrible puns. He's smart, sure, but he's still a child, which means he regularly does spectacularly dumb things. This is his story. Patalliro lives in a world basically like ours, except the weird stuff is totally normal. He constantly finds himself caught up in insane situations—international terrorists, space aliens, accidental time travel, you name it. His first real crisis as king comes when the International Diamond Syndicate decides they want a piece of Malynera's diamond mines. That's when he meets Bancoran, assigned as his bodyguard during a trip to Britain. And that's also how he meets Maraich, who turns out to be one of the assassins the IDS sent after him. Patalliro's got his own personal army backing him up: the Tamanegi, named for their distinctive onion-shaped wigs. They're identical-looking soldiers who wear masks and glasses and only go by numbers. They're supposed to protect their king, but honestly, they spend just as much time protecting the world from Patalliro as they do protecting him from it.
