In 2001, humanity was invaded by an alien species called BETA. Over the next twenty years, these extraterrestrial invaders conquered most of Eurasia and killed billions of people. In response, humans accelerated development of tactical weapons—basically giant fighting machines—to push back against the threat. The best pilots from around the world were recruited to a UN military base in Alaska called Yukon Base to join the Prominence Project, a joint Russian-American initiative. Their job was to test new prototype weapons, which sometimes meant going head-to-head against each other to evaluate performance.
