Keiichi Maebara moves to the small, peaceful town of Hinamizawa in summer 1983 after living in a busy city. He quickly befriends a group of local girls—Satoko, Rika, Rena, and Mion—and life seems pretty normal. That is, until he starts noticing that something's off about the town. At the Cotton Drifting Festival, Keiichi hears about a pattern of murders and disappearances that happen every year right after the celebration. The locals call it "Oyashiro's Curse," claiming that anyone who disrespects the village's patron deity will be killed or vanish. Keiichi initially dismisses it as just a scary story, but when an actual murder and disappearance occur following the festival, his friends clam up about it entirely. That's when paranoia sets in—he starts wondering if his new friends are somehow involved in these deaths, and whether he might be next.
