Tiana's been dreaming about opening a restaurant with her dad since childhood. Now that he's gone, the 19-year-old is determined to make it happen on her own. Her chance seems to finally be coming when her best friend Charlotte La Bouff hires her to make beignets for a fancy masquerade ball—one where Prince Naveen of Maldonia is supposed to show up. But at the ball, everything falls apart. Someone outbids her for the restaurant location she had her eye on. Desperate and heartbroken, Tiana does something she'd normally never do: she wishes upon a star. Instead of actual magic, a frog appears claiming to be Prince Naveen from earlier that night. He hears about her money troubles and offers a deal—he'll help her out if she kisses him. Figuring she's got nothing to lose, Tiana agrees. The kiss works, but not in the way she expected: she turns into a frog.
