Synopsis

England's throne has been fought over constantly, and during the Middle Ages, that struggle explodes into the War of the Roses. The Duke of York wants to knock King Henry VI and his heir off the throne and take it for himself. Richard Plantagenet is born on a grim day full of bad omens—the Duke's third son, but something's different about him. He's intersex, and his mother immediately rejects him for it. Growing up under her contempt leaves him disgusted with his own body and furious when people call him a demon. As Richard gets older, he's haunted by visions of Joan of Arc, England's old enemy, who keeps telling him he'll destroy everyone around him. He figures that if he helps his father become king, he might finally find some kind of redemption. But caught between his mother's hatred and Joan's curse, Richard's desperate bid for salvation might end up dragging his whole family into ruin instead.
