Shingo Araki was a Japanese animator and character designer who started drawing at five and made his professional debut as a cartoonist in 1955 at just eighteen. He joined Mushi Production in 1965, then founded Studio Jaguar the following year before transitioning into animation direction with the 1970 series "Joe of Tomorrow."
He became known for his work on Go Nagai adaptations—designing characters for Cutie Honey and UFO Robo Grendizer, and directing Devilman—but his real legacy came from his partnership with animation director Michi Himeno, whom he met in 1973. Together they formed Araki Production in 1975 and became celebrated for what fans often call their "Dynamic Duel"—a combination of Araki's dynamic draftsmanship with Himeno's elegant style. This collaboration defined several beloved series including Saint Seiya (1986-89), where their distinctive visual approach helped drive the show's international success.
Beyond their main work, Araki's credits span everything from Lupin III and Captain Harlock to Lady Oscar and Ulysses 31. He and Himeno also tackled animation direction on outsourced American productions at Toei Animation and Tokyo Movie Shinsha, including Mighty Orbots, The Adventures of the American Rabbit, and G.I. Joe: The Movie.
Araki died on December 1, 2011, from acute heart failure at age 72.
