An actress, screenwriter, director, and producer who became best known for founding Nemunoki Gakuen in 1968—Japan's first school dedicated to children with disabilities. Using her own money, Miyagi established the school in Shizuoka with a philosophy focused on gentle encouragement rather than rigid instruction. Students explored their abilities through painting, music, tea ceremony, and dance. The school eventually relocated to Kakegawa in 1997, expanding into what's now called Nemunoki Village. By that point it housed around 56 children and young adults (ages 2 to 38), 22 elderly residents, plus nearly 100 staff members and their families all living together on the same grounds. Miyagi directed the school until her death from lymphoma on March 21, 2020.
