Honami Yano is a Japanese animator best known for her distinctive independent animation work. She was born on a small island in Japan and studied at Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Film and New Media, where she worked under the acclaimed animator Kouji Yamamura.
Her graduation project, Chromosome Sweetheart (2017), caught significant attention early on, winning the KuanDog Prize for International Student Short Films at Taiwan's KuanDu International Animation Festival and earning nominations at Frameline and numerous other festivals. The film's success came after she'd discovered independent animation during an exchange program at the Rhode Island School of Design while studying in Kyoto.
Following graduation, Yano spent three years as a research assistant while developing her post-grad work. A Bite of Bone, her first film after leaving school and produced under Kouji Yamamura's supervision at his studio and gallery Au Praxinoscope, became a major milestone—it won the grand prize for short animation at the 45th Ottawa International Animation Festival.
Since 2021, she's been a Designated Assistant Professor at Nagoya University's Institutes of Innovation for Future Society, specifically within the Global Research Institute for Mobility in Society.
