Hometown: Tokyo, Japan.
Born in Tokyo but raised in West Germany through most of her childhood, Yuki grew up surrounded by classical and opera music thanks to her father's passion for it. He pushed her toward the piano, and she eventually developed a genuine love for both the instrument and music itself.
She started her career as an SE programmer before switching gears entirely in 1992 to pursue music full-time. Her first project was the female trio See-Saw, which released six singles and two albums over several years.
From there, Yuki shifted into composing work—writing scores for anime, films, TV, and games. She scored Blood: The Last Vampire in 2001 and handled music for the Xenosaga games, but her big break came that same year with the anime NOIR, whose soundtrack sold 50,000 copies. In 2002, she joined the .hack//SIGN project alongside vocalist Chiaki Ishikawa and American singer Emily Bindiger. She followed this with the album Fiction, another collaboration with Bindiger and featuring Xenosaga vocalist Deb Lyons.
Fans often point to her work on Mobile Suit Gundam SEED as one of her most commercially successful projects—the soundtrack hit number 5 on the Oricon Charts in its debut week and sold over 200,000 copies. She's also become well-known for scoring CLAMP's Tsubasa Chronicle across its various anime, movie, and OVA incarnations.
In 2007, Yuki formed the band Kalafina with two collaborators from the FictionJunction project, Wakana Ōtaki and Keiko Kubota, mainly to perform music for the anime Kara no Kyōkai. The band disbanded on March 13th, 2019.
