He debuted as a manga artist in 1983, but To-y in 1985 is what made him a major name. Beyond comics, he's done work illustrating CD jackets and advertising campaigns for men's cosmetics. His style is distinctive—clean, delicate linework with minimalist patterns and a quiet, refined feeling. That aesthetic hit hard in the late '80s and influenced a whole generation of manga artists who came after him.
Several now-accomplished writers apprenticed under him, including Katsutoshi Kawai, Hidehisa Masaki, Makoto Ito, and Toru Terada. He's maintained a close friendship with both Hiroyuki Asada and Shou Tashima over the years.
