Osamu Kobayashi was a Japanese animator and director who built his reputation on a handful of standout works that earned serious fan devotion. He started out as a designer and manga artist after high school before transitioning into animation, where he'd eventually work as an illustrator, mechanic designer, and director.
He's best known for Beck and Paradise Kiss—both projects that showcased his distinctive visual style and storytelling sensibility. Kobayashi passed away in April 2021 at 57, following a two-year battle with kidney cancer.
