Takemoto spent nearly his entire animation career at Kyoto Animation, having joined the studio in 1996. He got his first crack at directing with Nurse Witch Komugi-chan Magikarte, though Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu is generally considered his first true solo directorial effort.
On July 18, 2019, Takemoto was one of 35 people killed in the Kyoto Animation arson attack. His death was confirmed by family members a week later.
