Ryo studied graphic design at Tama Art University, graduating in 2009, then went on to study animation, film, and new media at Tokyo University of the Arts, finishing in 2012. He works as a freelance animation director and illustrator.
His breakthrough came with A Wind Egg (2012), which won the Lotte Reiniger Promotion Award for Animated Film at Stuttgart's festival. Before that, he'd collaborated on Orchestra (2008) and made Animal Dance (2009). His films have screened at major animation festivals including those in Hiroshima, Toronto, Ottawa, and Annecy.
