Ryou Asai is the pen name of Ryou Sasai (佐々井 遼), a novelist best known for his 2010 debut Kirishima, Bukatsu Yamerutte yo, which won the 22nd Shousetsu Subaru Newcomer Award. The book was later adapted into a live-action film that took Picture of the Year at the 36th Japan Academy Prize.
A devoted Studio Ghibli fan, Asai had animator Katsuya Kondou—who works at the studio—illustrate the cover of his 2013 novel Sekai Chizu wo Shitagaki. In 2016, Granta included him in their list of Best Young Japanese Novelists.
