ClariS is a Japanese vocal group that started as a duo of high school girls performing anonymously on Nico Nico Douga under the name "Alice☆Clara" around 2009-2010. They went major in 2010 under the name ClariS, which they've said means "sunny, clean and bright" in Latin.
The group has always kept their identities private—they're only represented through character illustrations. When they started high school in April 2012, they doubled down on this anonymity to focus on their studies.
The characters: Clara wears pink and is represented by a crescent moon, while Alice wears blue and is represented by the sun. These visual motifs come from the members' own preferences. Clara's drawn with wavy hair and no bangs; Alice has straight hair with bangs.
The original lineup didn't last forever. Alice left the group in June 2014 after releasing "PARTY TIME." By November 2014, ClariS was reborn as "Brand New ClariS" (also called Shinsei ClariS) with a new member named Karen joining. Their first single with Karen was the "Tsukimonogatari" ending theme "border."
Karen stuck around until 2024, when two new members, Elly and Anna, joined at LisAni Live 2025 on January 25, 2025. The group is now a three-member unit.
