Mirai Mizue is a leading figure in Japan's contemporary abstract animation scene. Born in Tokyo in 1981, he studied animation at Tama Arts University starting in 2002 and has since become known for his obsessive, cell-based approach to non-narrative filmmaking. His work is characterized by dense, frame-by-frame compositions and a rhythmic intensity that tends to hit viewers hard. His films have screened at over 100 festivals across roughly 20 countries, earning nominations at major venues like Annecy, Zagreb, Ottawa, and Hiroshima. DEVOUR DINNER took Second Prize at Animadrid.
Beyond animation, Mizue works as an illustrator for Japanese novelists and teaches at O-HARA school. He's also active in the Japan Animation Association. In 2009, SICAF commissioned a film from him; he served on their selection committee the following year.
More recently, he's been exploring new creative ground with minimalistic abstract animation built around linear figures—a notable shift from his earlier densely detailed work.
