Hirohiko Araki dropped out of Miyagi University of Education before finishing his degree. He broke into manga with Busou Poker, published under the pen name Toshiyuki Araki, which earned him the 20th Tezuka Award.
Beyond his flagship series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure—which has become a global phenomenon—Araki has collaborated with some unexpected partners. In 2009, the Louvre picked him as one of five artists to create works for the museum, resulting in Rohan at the Louvre, a one-shot starring JoJo's character Rohan Kishibe. The piece was shown at the "The Louvre Invites Comic-Strip Art" exhibition and later published internationally, hitting shelves in the US through NBM Publishing in 2012.
That same year, Araki teamed up with luxury brand Gucci and fashion magazine Spur for a 2011 exhibition in Shinjuku celebrating Gucci's 90th anniversary. The collaboration included original fashion designs by Araki alongside a life-size Rohan figure and pieces from Gucci's fall/winter collection. Spur also ran JoJo spinoffs by Araki featuring Rohan and later Jolyne Cujoh from Part 6.
JoJolion, the eighth installment of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, won the Grand Prize in the manga category at the 17th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2013. In 2016, Araki won the 45th Annual Best Dresser Awards in the Academic and Cultural Arts division. When asked about his youthful looks, he's said he attributes it to washing his face each morning with Tokyo tap water.
