Akihito Yoshitomi is best known for creating Eat-Man, the surreal manga that spawned two anime adaptations by Studio Deen and later a sequel called Eat-Man: The Main Dish. The first anime was notably produced while the manga was still running its initial chapters in Dengeki Comic Gao!, with the manga's first volume dropping right alongside the anime premiere. Yoshitomi himself conceived the concept for that first episode. A year after it wrapped, Studio Deen returned with a second adaptation that stuck closer to the source material.
He's also had other works adapted into anime, including Ray and Blue Drop. His career as an illustrator actually started while he was still in high school, working on the sci-fi light novel Pangea from 1989 to 1991. By 1991, he'd moved into manga with his first original series, Loan Knight. Along the way, he's done character design work—notably for the PS1 action game Cybernetic EMPIRE in 1999—and illustrated a booklet for the Super Famicom JRPG Illvanian no Shiro in 1994.
During his high school years, Yoshitomi entered a Shonen Jump newcomer contest judged by Akira Toriyama, but didn't make the cut.
These days, he's active on YouTube posting drawing process videos and documenting the creation of 24-ku no Hanako-san (Hanako of the 24th Ward), serialized in Champion Red. Fans often note his love of sci-fi—he cites Katsuhiro Otomo, Masamune Shirow, Shinichi Hoshi, and Yasutaka Tsutsui as major inspirations, and he's into Sherlock Holmes. He's also a heavy metal and prog rock enthusiast; Yes is his favorite band. He occasionally creates one-shots and doujinshi exploring yuri and yaoi themes.
