After graduating in 1994, he joined Gainax and worked as a key animator on Evangelion before making his directorial debut with Gurren Lagann—a series that earned him an individual award at the twelfth Animation Kobe Festival. He eventually left Gainax in 2011 to establish his own studio, Trigger.
