Lan, a Native American boy living in the Sierra Nevada foothills with his father, comes across two bear cubs one day. He names them Jacky and Jill—brother and sister—and quickly bonds with them as they play together. Their friendship doesn't last long, though. Lan's father accidentally kills the cubs' mother, and Lan, feeling responsible, decides to take Jacky and Jill home to raise them himself.
