Synopsis

Admiral Yang Wen-li has defected intelligence officer Commander Baghdash make an emergency broadcast exposing the National Salvation Military Council's coup as orchestrated by the Galactic Empire. Without hard evidence to back it up, the accusation still manages to push former Rear Admiral Andrew Lynch into confessing his own role in destabilizing the Free Planets Alliance. A shootout between Lynch and Admiral Dwight Greenhill ends the Alliance's brief martial law period for good. Meanwhile, the Empire is dealing with its own fallout. Duke Otto von Braunschweig's nuclear bombing of Westerland destroys the Lippstadt League, and the video evidence of the massacre spreads. Marquis Reinhard von Lohengramm had allowed the attack to happen for his own advantage—a choice that damages his relationship with High Admiral Siegfried Kircheis and weighs on him as he approaches total power. His personal ambitions start catching up with him as the reality of leadership sets in. Both the Alliance and Empire are wrapping up their civil wars, but the damage is done. Neither side will recover what they've lost. Yang and Reinhard find themselves on opposite ends of the galaxy, each aware that the other is the only opponent who truly matches them. It's a grim kind of comfort.
