Far in the future, humanity's discovered a way to cheat death—by uploading their consciousness into mechanical bodies. Problem is, it costs a fortune. A poor kid named Tetsurou Hoshino has heard rumors that the Galaxy Express 999, a massive train that roams the universe, will give you a free mechanical body once you reach the end of the line. It's his ticket out of poverty. That plan falls apart when Count Mecha, a machine-man hybrid villain, kills Tetsurou's mother in cold blood. Just when things look hopeless, a mysterious blonde woman named Maetel saves his life. She bears an uncanny resemblance to his dead mother and offers him something incredible: a pass to the Galaxy Express. There's a catch, though—she wants him to travel with her. So Tetsurou boards the train and sets off across the galaxy, visiting strange worlds and getting caught up in dangerous situations. His goal is simple: reach the end of the line and finally get what he's always wanted.
