Synopsis

Reinhard von Lohengramm's scheme to weaken the Free Planets Alliance comes together when the corrupt Rear Admiral Arthur Lynch orchestrates a military coup on Heinessen. Lynch convinces his old friend Admiral Dwight Greenhill to help the National Salvation Military Council overthrow the civilian government—exactly as Reinhard planned. Admiral Yang Wen-li steps in to defend democracy and restore the Alliance's constitution, but this means fighting his own people, including Frederica Greenhill's father. With the Alliance distracted by internal conflict, the Galactic Empire finally moves against the Lippstadt League and its leader, Duke Otto von Braunschweig. But Reinhard's trusted friend High Admiral Kircheis is fighting on the frontier, so Reinhard increasingly turns to Vice Admiral Paul von Oberstein for counsel. Oberstein is ruthless and cunning, and his influence over the admiralty keeps growing. Both sides face heavy casualties, and both Yang and Reinhard find themselves wrestling with the same doubts: How will history judge what they're doing? Do the results matter more than the methods?
