In early 1900s Hokkaido, just after the Russo-Japanese War, an ex-soldier named Saichi Sugimoto scrapes by panning for gold. He earned the nickname "Sugimoto the Immortal" for surviving impossible odds in combat, and he's determined to strike it rich for a specific reason: to support the widow of his best friend, who was killed in action. She needs expensive treatment abroad for her failing eyesight. When a drunk acquaintance mentions a legend about a murderer who stole Ainu gold and hid it somewhere in Hokkaido before getting arrested, Sugimoto doesn't pay much attention. The criminal apparently tattooed a coded map of the treasure's location on his cellmates' bodies as payment for helping him escape. But Sugimoto takes the story seriously once he stumbles across that same drunk man's corpse—complete with the tattoos—right as a grizzly bear approaches to finish her kill. A young Ainu girl named Asirpa saves his life. Her father was one of the murdered Ainu. The two decide to team up: Asirpa wants to recover what was stolen from her people, and Sugimoto needs the gold to keep his promise. With her hunting skills and his survival instincts, they set out to find the hidden treasure.
