Synopsis

Ryza Stout lives a pretty boring life on Kurken Island, despite spending most of her time pretending to have adventures in the woods. The problem is, the island's strict rules forbid anyone from leaving—something that drives her crazy. As a farmer's daughter, she's expected to just accept things as they are, but that's never really been her style. One day, fed up with the monotony, Ryza convinces her two closest friends—Tao, a bookish type, and Lent, who dreams of becoming a warrior—to sneak off the island with her by boat. They end up in a nearby forest where they run into Klaudia, a merchant's daughter who's also wandered away from where she's supposed to be. The four of them, completely unprepared and way in over their heads, quickly realize the forest is far more dangerous than they expected. Things get bad until they're saved by Empel, an alchemist, and Lila, his capable bodyguard. This chance meeting becomes a turning point for Ryza. Through them, she discovers alchemy—and suddenly, her life has a whole new direction.
