Synopsis

The Shadows are a family of dark-skinned nobles living in an enormous mansion hidden deep in the mountains, away from civilization. They're known for their pitch-black appearance and the soot they shed when upset. When a Shadow child comes of age, they're paired with a Living Doll who serves as both their servant and something more—essentially the human face their master can't have. Emilico is a bright, freshly made Doll assigned to Kate, a quiet and gentle master. The two couldn't be more different personality-wise, but Emilico throws herself into the job anyway. As she settles into her duties, she starts connecting with the other Dolls and their masters, gradually uncovering what she's really meant to do here. The Dolls live by strict rules—chief among them: don't worry about unimportant things. But Emilico's naturally curious nature makes that rule pretty hard to follow, especially when the Shadows House is full of mysteries begging to be solved.
