Synopsis

Mages are born with one of four crests that determines their magical potential. Gaius, blessed with a creation crest, became the world's strongest sage—but he was never satisfied. Desperate for combat abilities his crest couldn't provide, he decided his only option was to reincarnate thousands of years into the future and hope for better luck. When Gaius returns as Mathias Hildesheimer, he finally gets the close-combat crest he wanted. The catch? Magic has basically died out in this era. The techniques that used to be common knowledge are now forgotten legends, and the crest Mathias fought so hard to obtain is actually considered the weakest one around—sarcastically called the "Crest of Failure." Mathias doesn't care. He enrolls at the Second Academy in the royal capital and blows past every test they throw at him. But as he settles in, he uncovers an unsettling truth: demons are responsible for magic's collapse, and centuries of his absence means humanity's been suffering because of it. Now he's got to fix things.
