Synopsis

It's 2045, and the world's a mess. A global economic collapse combined with AI going haywire has pushed humanity into the Sustainable War—basically an endless, managed conflict designed to keep going indefinitely. Most people don't really feel the existential threat from AI in their day-to-day lives yet, but it's there. Enter Public Security Section 9, led by the fully cybernetic Motoko Kusanagi. They're tasked with dealing with crimes committed by Posthumans—a new type of evolved human that's started popping up. Section 9 heads to Tokyo, which is still recovering from devastation caused by an earlier war, and things quickly get complicated. They run into a refugee group calling themselves "N" and a hostile American Special Forces unit. When a hijacked submarine threatens to kick off a nuclear war, everything spirals into chaos. Suddenly it's a three-way fight between Section 9, American forces, and the Posthumans, with the stakes getting higher by the minute.
