The Austrian Empire arranges a political marriage between Princess Marie Antoinette and France's Crown Prince Louis XVI to strengthen diplomatic ties. Marie Antoinette resents having her future decided for her, but she has no choice in the matter. When she arrives in France, she meets Oscar François de Jarjayes, the Commander of the Royal Guard. Oscar was raised as a boy because her father wanted a son and needed an heir to the title. She's respected by soldiers and courtiers alike, but she's struggling with living a lie—she wants to be a woman, not pretend to be a man. As Oscar serves the young queen, she becomes increasingly aware of the gap between Marie Antoinette's extravagant spending and the desperate poverty of ordinary people. The poor are growing more resentful by the day, and Oscar finds it harder to ignore their suffering while watching the queen waste fortunes on luxury.
