Synopsis

After their hometown is destroyed, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro swear to join the Defense Force, Japan's military organization that fights massive monsters called kaijuu. Fast-forward thirty years: Kafka's given up on that dream. Now 32, he spends his days cleaning up dead kaijuu after Defense Force soldiers—including Mina, who made it big—take them down. Everything changes when Kafka meets Reno Ichikawa, his new coworker. Reno's got the same hunger Kafka used to have: he wants nothing more than to be a Defense Force officer. Their ambitions clash when a stray kaijuu attacks them both. Kafka's instincts kick in and he saves Reno's life, but takes a beating in the process. While recovering in the hospital, Kafka's attacked by another kaijuu. The incident gives him an insane ability—he can transform into a humanoid kaijuu with all the same strength and powers as the monsters terrorizing the country. The military calls him "Kaijuu No. 8," but Kafka sees it as his shot at redemption. Bonded by mutual respect, he and Reno team up to finally make their childhood dream happen and join Mina on the Defense Force's frontlines.
