In late 1990s Japan, a string of suicides makes headlines—all disturbingly similar, and all involving the same location: the Fujou building, a decrepit abandoned structure looming over the city. The pattern is impossible to ignore. Shiki Ryougi, a detached girl living alone in a sparse apartment, senses something supernatural at work. Armed with her own mysterious abilities, she partners with Touko Aozaki, an eccentric detective who makes dolls and deals in magic, along with Touko's assistant Mikiya Kokutou. Together, they dig into what's really happening behind these deaths, following a twisted trail through a strange and shadowy world to uncover the truth.
