The Yellow Turban rebellion sets off the collapse of the Han dynasty. At the story's start, both Liu Bei and Cao Cao are nobodies—Liu Bei looking for a way to restore order to a fractured world, Cao Cao wrestling with his destiny. Liu Bei eventually meets two formidable warriors, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu, and the three swear the Oath of the Peach Garden to fight and die together for justice. Power initially rests with the warlord Dong Zhuo and his champion Lu Bu, but the two turn on each other over a woman. The power vacuum works in Cao Cao's favor. Lu Bu is the better fighter, but Cao Cao's got luck on his side in battle. Liu Bei tries to do right, but he's just one piece in China's massive chess game. War spreads across the country with no clear winner, leaving things wide open for the sequels.
