The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu
Most people probably don't believe in aliens, time travelers, or espers—and Kyon's pretty confident he's one of them. That changes fast when he meets Haruhi Suzumiya on his first day of high school. During introductions, Haruhi casually announces she's bored with normal people and wants to meet supernatural beings. Kyon thinks she's joking until she gets frustrated that the school has no paranormal clubs. He accidentally encourages her to start one, which turns out to be a mistake. She founds the SOS Brigade (the Spreading Fun all Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade—yeah, it's a mouthful) and basically strong-arms Kyon into joining. The brigade fills out with three other members: Yuki Nagato, a quiet girl obsessed with books; Mikuru Asahina, a shy junior; and Itsuki Koizumi, who's weirdly upbeat about everything. On the surface they're just normal students, but each of them knows something about Haruhi that Kyon doesn't. As he gets pulled deeper into the SOS Brigade's strange activities, he starts piecing together the truth about who Haruhi really is and what she's actually capable of.
