In a world locked in endless conflict between humans and witches, beastfallen exist as cursed outcasts—humans transformed into beast-like creatures with inhuman strength. Both sides fear them for what they are, so most beastfallen end up as mercenaries, hunting witches for coin. A cheerful witch named Zero breaks the mold by hiring one such beastfallen—she just calls him "Mercenary"—to be her bodyguard. He joins her and Albus, a young mage, as they travel in search of the Grimoire of Zero, a legendary spellbook that could cause serious damage if it fell into the wrong hands. As they journey together, Mercenary's tough exterior cracks. He starts showing genuine compassion for both humans and witches, and this mismatched group bonds in unexpected ways.
