Patema is a curious girl living in an underground civilization connected by an intricate tunnel system. Driven partly by the disappearance of a close friend, she's constantly getting into trouble for exploring places she shouldn't, especially given her royal standing. When she ventures into the forbidden zone, she's startled by a strange creature and tumbles into a massive pit—only to emerge on the surface, where gravity works backwards. Unable to stop herself from falling into the sky, she's rescued by Age, a skeptical student from Aiga, a totalitarian nation that teaches its people to fear "Inverts" like Patema as cursed beings destined to be consumed by the heavens. But Age doesn't buy the propaganda. Instead of turning her in, he decides to help her. What starts as an unlikely friendship between two teenagers from opposite worlds becomes an investigation into the truth behind their origins.
