The Rising of the Shield Hero

Four ordinary Japanese guys get summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc to save it from the Waves of Catastrophe—disasters that have been destroying the land for centuries. Each hero receives a different weapon: sword, spear, bow, and shield. Naofumi Iwatani, a typical otaku, draws the short straw and becomes the Shield Hero. With nothing but a shield and zero offensive power, he's instantly looked down on by the other heroes and pretty much everyone else in the kingdom. When the heroes get resources and training partners, Naofumi teams up with Malty Melromarc, the only person willing to work with him. She betrays him almost immediately and spreads a false accusation that he assaulted her. Suddenly Naofumi's public enemy number one, dealing with hatred and discrimination for something he never did. Bitter and distrustful, he decides to pull himself up anyway and rebuild his reputation from scratch. But traveling solo proves too hard, so he buys a half-dead demi-human slave named Raphtalia to be his companion. Now with the Waves closing in on Melromarc, Naofumi and Raphtalia have to fight to keep the kingdom and its people from destruction.
