Jungle Taitei: Susume Leo!
Jungle Emperor's massive success in Japan inspired Dr. Tezuka to create a sequel in 1966, called "The New Jungle Emperor" or "Onward, Leo!" in Japan. The problem? He made it without an NBC deal and stayed truer to his original manga, which meant more character deaths and genuinely sad episodes. NBC wasn't interested—they had their 52 episodes and thought the new series would be impossible to market in America. So New Jungle Emperor stayed off American TV until 1984, when it finally aired under the title Leo The Lion. This sequel was set a few years later. Kimba was now grown up with his mate Kitty and two cubs of their own. The series mainly followed Rune, their male cub, as he matured and worked toward becoming as powerful as his father. When the English dub was produced, licensing issues prevented them from using the name Kimba, so they went with the original Japanese character names instead.
