At Shinyo Academy, female students whisper about Boogiepop—a legendary figure rumored to be a Shinigami who kills people at the peak of their beauty, before they fade. The truth is stranger: Boogiepop is actually a guardian entity that emerges as the alter ego of Touka Miyashita, a high school girl, to protect the world from supernatural threats. Most of the time, Boogiepop lies dormant. But when a series of mysterious disappearances—dismissed by the school as runaways—starts happening, Boogiepop awakens. There's something else lurking on campus though, something dangerous that's waiting for the right moment to make its move. The series weaves together themes about how humans experience and perceive time, while exploring the characters' tangled relationships, emotions, and pasts.
