Lord Enma is a massive red oni stationed in the Other World, where he presides over the afterlife and determines whether the dead end up in Heaven or Hell. The character draws inspiration from the Hindu god Yama.
Goku first encounters Enma after being killed by Piccolo during the Raditz fight. At that point, Enma holds the distinction of being the only person to have ever completed the full journey along Serpent Road—until he agrees to let Goku give it a shot as a way to reach North Kaio's planet, which sits at the road's end. He's apparently got some combat chops too; he claims he fought Raditz when the demon tried to force his way into Heaven and boasts about winning that encounter. Still, Kami has made it clear that North Kaio outclasses him in a fight.
